How to Tell When Your Brakes Need Replacing
Brakes & Safety · 4 min read
Brakes are the one repair you should never delay. The good news is they usually tell you clearly when they need attention. Here's what to listen and feel for.
Squealing means pads are getting low
Many pads have a small metal wear indicator that squeals when the friction material gets thin. A regular high-pitched squeal when you brake is your cue to get them checked — it's not yet an emergency, but the clock is ticking.
Grinding means stop now
A harsh metal-on-metal grinding sound usually means the pad is completely worn and the metal backing is chewing into the disc. Every stop from here damages the disc — turning a pad-only job into pads and discs. Book it in straight away.
Vibration through the pedal
A pulsing or vibration through the brake pedal, especially at higher speeds, often means warped discs. It's uncomfortable and reduces braking efficiency, and it won't fix itself.
A soft or sinking pedal
If the pedal feels spongy or slowly sinks to the floor, that points to air or a leak in the hydraulic system, or a failing master cylinder. This is a safety-critical fault — get it looked at immediately.
Longer stopping distances or pulling to one side
If the car takes noticeably longer to stop, or pulls to one side under braking, the brakes are unbalanced or worn. A sticking caliper is a common cause and, left alone, can overheat and cause further damage.
Do discs always need doing with pads?
Not always. If the discs are still above their minimum thickness and aren't scored or warped, new pads alone are fine. A good garage measures them and shows you, rather than replacing parts that don't need it. Many brake jobs can be completed the same day.
Frequently asked questions
How long do brake pads last?
Very roughly 25,000–40,000 miles, but it depends hugely on driving style and whether it's town or motorway use. The warning signs matter more than the mileage.
Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?
No — grinding usually means metal-on-metal contact that's damaging the discs and reducing braking. Get it seen the same day.
Can you replace brakes the same day?
In most cases yes, subject to parts availability. Call 07359 070 779 first thing for the best chance of a same-day slot.
