How Much Does an MOT Cost? (2026 UK Price Guide)
MOT · 4 min read
The MOT is one of the few car costs that's capped by law, so no test centre can legally overcharge you for the test itself. Here's exactly what an MOT should cost in 2026, why many garages (including us) charge below the cap, and how to avoid paying twice.
The maximum MOT fee is set by the government
The DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency) sets a legal maximum an MOT test station can charge. It has been frozen for years, so these are the current ceilings, not a garage's invention:
- Car (Class 4): £54.85 maximum
- Van up to 3,000 kg (Class 4): £54.85 maximum
- Larger van 3,000–3,500 kg (Class 7): £58.60 maximum
- Motorcycle (Class 1/2): £29.65 maximum
Why many garages charge less than the cap
The figures above are maximums, not fixed prices — a garage is free to charge less, and many do to win your business, hoping you'll also come back for any repairs. It's common to see MOTs advertised anywhere from around £30 up to the £54.85 cap. At SS ADAM LTD we keep MOT pricing competitive and, crucially, we never invent faults to inflate the bill.
The bigger cost is repairs, not the test
The test fee is small; the real spend comes if your car fails and needs work. This is where an honest garage matters most. A good test centre shows you exactly what failed, quotes the repair in writing before touching anything, and doesn't pad the list with 'advisories' dressed up as failures.
The free re-test rule can save you money
If your car fails and you leave it at the same test centre for repairs, you're usually entitled to a free partial re-test (for many items) as long as it's re-tested within 10 working days. Take the car away and bring it back later and you may have to pay again — so it often pays to have the failure fixed where you tested.
When is my MOT due?
A new car needs its first MOT after 3 years, then every year after that. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT. You're allowed to book your MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it expires and keep the same renewal date — so there's no reason to leave it to the last minute. You can check any car's MOT and tax status free on the GOV.UK website using the registration.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an MOT cost for a car in 2026?
The legal maximum for a car (Class 4) is £54.85. Many garages charge less — anywhere from around £30 up to the cap. The test fee is fixed by the DVSA; only repairs vary.
Is a cheap MOT worse than an expensive one?
No — the MOT test itself is identical everywhere because it follows one government standard. A cheaper test isn't a lesser test. What varies is the honesty and price of any repairs afterwards.
Do I get a free re-test if my car fails?
Usually yes for many items, if you leave the car at the same test centre and it's re-tested within 10 working days. Ask the garage to confirm before you take the car away.
Can I drive my car if the MOT has expired?
Only to a pre-booked MOT test (or to/from repairs for an MOT). Otherwise it's illegal and uninsured, with fines up to £1,000. Book before it expires — you can do so up to a month early without losing your renewal date.
