How Much Does a Car Respray Cost in the UK?
Body Shop & Paint · 6 min read
"How much to respray my car?" is one of the most common questions we get — and the honest answer is: it depends on the car, the colour and the prep. Here's what actually drives the price, so you know what a fair quote looks like.
What you're really paying for: prep
The paint itself is a small part of the cost. The bulk of a quality respray is preparation — removing trim and fittings, repairing dents and rust, sanding, masking, priming and getting the surface flawless. A cheap respray that skips prep looks good for a month and then shows every flaw underneath. Good prep is why a proper job lasts years.
Full respray vs partial vs panel repair
You don't always need a full respray. If the damage is limited to one or two panels, a colour-matched panel repair blended into the surrounding bodywork is far cheaper and invisible when done well. A full respray makes sense for a colour change, widespread fading or corrosion, or restoring a car you plan to keep.
- Panel repair / repaint — a scuffed bumper or single panel
- Partial respray — several panels or a section of the car
- Full respray — whole car, or a colour change
What makes one quote higher than another
Colour matters: metallic, pearlescent and some manufacturer colours cost more to match and lay down than a solid colour. Car size and complexity matter — more panels, more trim, more labour. And the condition underneath matters: rust and dent repair add prep time. A vague low quote often means corners will be cut somewhere; a detailed quote that itemises the prep is usually the more honest one.
Getting a finish that lasts
A lasting respray is colour-matched to your car's paint code and finished with proper lacquer. Ask to see previous work — at SS ADAM LTD you can see real before-and-after transformations (like the Mercedes C200 videos on our homepage). We give a fixed written quote after inspecting the car, so you know exactly what's included before any work starts.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cheap respray worth it?
Rarely. The price of a respray is mostly prep and labour — cut those and the finish fails quickly. A slightly higher quote with proper preparation is almost always better value over time.
Can you match my exact colour?
Yes — we mix to your vehicle's manufacturer paint code and blend into surrounding panels so repairs are invisible.
How long does a respray take?
A panel repair can be a day or two; a full respray takes longer because of prep and drying time. We give a firm timescale with your written quote.
