How Much Does a Car Service Cost in the UK?
Servicing · 5 min read
"Service" can mean anything from a quick oil-and-filter to a top-to-bottom inspection, which is why quotes vary so much. Here's what each level of service actually includes, roughly what it costs in the UK, and how to avoid paying dealer prices for the same work.
The three levels of service
Most garages offer three tiers. Which you need depends on mileage, time since the last service, and your car's schedule:
- Interim service — oil and oil filter plus a safety inspection of brakes, tyres, lights and fluids. Recommended every 6 months / 6,000 miles for high-mileage drivers.
- Full service — everything in an interim plus air filter, more fluids, a deeper inspection and more checks. Recommended every 12 months / 12,000 miles.
- Major service — a full service plus longer-life items such as spark plugs, fuel and cabin filters. Usually every 2 years / 24,000 miles.
Typical UK price ranges
Prices vary by car, engine and location, but as a rough independent-garage guide: an interim service often runs from around £90–£140, a full service from around £150–£250, and a major service from around £250–£400+. Larger, prestige or complex engines cost more. A main dealer typically charges noticeably more for the same schedule. We always give a fixed written quote for your specific car rather than a vague 'from' price.
Servicing does NOT void your manufacturer warranty
This is the biggest myth in car servicing. Under UK and EU 'block exemption' rules, you can have your car serviced at any independent garage — not just a main dealer — without voiding the manufacturer warranty, as long as the correct parts and the manufacturer's service schedule are used, and the work is recorded. We follow the schedule and stamp your service book, so your warranty stays intact and you keep the resale value of a full history.
Why a service is cheaper than a breakdown
Servicing feels like a cost until you skip it. Fresh oil and a proper inspection catch small problems — a perished hose, worn brake pads, a weeping seal — while they're cheap, instead of after they've caused a breakdown or engine damage. It's the cheapest insurance your car can have, and it protects resale value.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a full car service cost in the UK?
At an independent garage a full service typically costs around £150–£250 depending on the car, versus more at a main dealer. Interim services are less; major services more. Always ask for a fixed written quote for your specific vehicle.
How often should I service my car?
As a rule of thumb, an interim every 6 months / 6,000 miles and a full service every 12 months / 12,000 miles, but check your handbook — some cars have longer schedules. Call with your reg and we'll advise.
Will servicing at an independent garage void my warranty?
No. UK block-exemption rules let you service anywhere, provided the right parts and schedule are used and the work is recorded — which we do, stamping your service book.
What's the difference between a service and an MOT?
An MOT is a legal annual safety and emissions test; a service is preventative maintenance (oil, filters, inspection) that isn't a legal requirement but keeps the car reliable and protects the warranty. They're separate, though many people book them together.
