The engine management light (EML) is your car's way of saying "something needs looking at" — but it ranges from trivial to serious, and the light itself doesn't tell you which. Here's how to read the situation.
Steady amber vs flashing
A steady amber light generally means a fault has been logged but it's usually safe to drive carefully to a garage. A flashing light is more serious — typically an active misfire — and continuing to drive can destroy the catalytic converter. If it's flashing, ease off and get it checked as soon as it's safe.
Common causes
The EML covers a huge range of systems, so the causes vary enormously.
- A loose or faulty fuel cap (genuinely — check this first)
- Oxygen (lambda) or air-flow sensor faults
- Misfires from worn spark plugs or coils
- EGR valve or DPF issues on diesels
- Emissions and catalytic converter faults
Why guesswork is expensive
The EML stores a fault code, but a code is a starting point, not a diagnosis. The same code can have several causes, and replacing parts based on the code alone is how people end up paying for a sensor that was never the problem. A proper diagnostic reads the codes, live data and physical symptoms together to find the actual cause.
What to do now
Check the fuel cap is tight, note whether the light is steady or flashing, and note any change in how the car drives (power loss, rough running, smoke). Then book a diagnostic.
