Car Won't Start? A Mechanic's Step-by-Step Checklist
Breakdown & Recovery · 5 min read
A car that won't start is stressful, but the cause is usually one of a handful of things — and the symptom tells you which. Work through this checklist before you panic. If you're stuck in or around Salford or Manchester, our breakdown recovery can come to you during opening hours.
Nothing happens at all (no lights, no click)
If the dashboard is dead, the interior lights don't come on and nothing happens when you turn the key, it's almost always the battery — flat, or a loose/corroded terminal. Check whether the headlights and interior lights work: if they're dim or dead too, the battery is the prime suspect. A battery that's several years old, or that drained after leaving lights on, is the usual culprit.
A single click or rapid clicking
Lights come on but you hear a click (or rapid clicking) when you turn the key? That points to a battery too weak to spin the starter, or the starter motor itself. A jump start that gets you going means the battery or charging system; if a jump does nothing, the starter motor is more likely.
It cranks but won't fire up
If the engine turns over (that familiar spinning sound) but never catches, the battery and starter are fine — you have a fuel, spark or sensor problem. Common causes are an empty tank (check the gauge honestly), a fuel pump or filter issue, faulty spark plugs or coils, or a crank/cam sensor. This one usually needs diagnostics to pin down.
The dashboard lights flicker or the immobiliser shows
A flashing car/key symbol, or dashboard lights that flicker as you crank, can mean the immobiliser doesn't recognise the key (try your spare, or hold the key near the start button), or a low battery confusing the electronics. Modern cars do strange things on a weak battery.
What to do next
If a jump start works, drive to a garage rather than switching off — and get the battery and charging system tested, because it may not restart. If nothing works, don't keep grinding the starter (you can flatten the battery completely or overheat the starter). Call for recovery and diagnostics.
- Check the tank isn't actually empty
- Check battery terminals are tight and clean
- Try the spare key if the immobiliser light shows
- Try a jump start — but get it checked even if it works
- Don't crank repeatedly; call for help if it won't fire
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my car start but the lights work?
If the lights work but you get a click or nothing when turning the key, the battery is likely too weak to turn the starter, or the starter motor has failed. If it cranks but won't fire, it's a fuel, spark or sensor issue instead.
Is it the battery or the starter motor?
A jump start that works points to the battery or charging system. If a jump does nothing and you only get a click, the starter motor is more likely. A proper test confirms which, so you don't replace the wrong part.
Do you offer breakdown recovery in Salford and Manchester?
Yes — SS ADAM LTD offers breakdown recovery across Salford, Manchester and Greater Manchester during opening hours. Call 07359 070 779 and we'll come to you, then diagnose and fix the cause.
Can jump-starting damage my car?
Done correctly it's safe, but connecting the leads in the wrong order can damage electronics. If in doubt, call for help rather than risk it — and always get the battery tested afterwards.
